When I Was Little

I was a delicate wallflower
with rust-coloured glasses
participating from the side
watching others bloom
I wanted to write stories
and share blithe anecdotes
about their interesting lives
and the flowers within them
I was six when I discovered
you can’t wish upon a star
and that life doesn’t always
turn out the way you planned it
and instead, a lot of stuff
happened to me instead
I feel like I should be sorry
but I don’t know what for
so instead of writing about
how other people think and live
I write about my own life
and how they made me
who I am
